Gospel of Thomas

Updated: Nov 1, 2021

If I were to say to someone that there is only one reality, they would probably agree, including scientists. Obviously, we are sharing the same reality. It is obvious because we are communicating, and we can agree that there is a tree over there, for example.

Furthermore, if there was such a thing as another reality, we could never know it, or see it. Why? Because if we could know it, then it would obviously be part of this reality.

The difference between myself, and most people, is that I have taken the time to carefully contemplate the implications of one Reality.

Let's first define Reality as the following:

-It is ever present. It cannot, not be. In other words, it can't disappear.

-It is the substance of everything. It is the essence of whatever it is that supposedly exists. In other words, we could never separate the tree, or the universe, or ourselves from Reality.

When we start looking for Reality, the only possible candidate is Consciousness. Unless we wish to argue that Consciousness itself is an illusion, or not real. That would be the equivalent of saying 'I am not real'. If the knower of perceptions is not real, how could anything we see be real?

As long as I stop here, saying there is only one Reality, I'm OK. No one is offended. No one is going to think that I am a nut for simply stating the obvious that there is one Reality or that Consciousness is real. But if I were to continue, and talk about the natural implications of one Reality, I might lose some friends (and I don't wish to lose friends).

For example, understanding one Reality, implies the following:

  • There isn't anything here. The body and the world are appearing in Consciousness. It is impossible to experience anything outside of Consciousness. Time & space are concepts arising within Consciousness. Consciousness is the true background of experience. In other words, Consciousness = Reality. Our best science is saying the same thing when is says that local realism has been proven to be false. In other words, according to physics, when we remove Consciousness, there isn't anything there (at least nothing under the speed of light). Cognitive Scientist Donald Hoffman has reached the same conclusion (that Consciousness is fundamental) using mathematical models based on evolution and natural selection.

  • The body and the world are not real. One Reality means that this waking state experience is made of the same stuff as the night-time dream (or the Ayahuasca experience). It is obvious to everyone that the night-time dream is less real than this current experience. However, they are much more alike than we imagine. They are both illusions. They are both dreams. One is a dream within a dream. Yes, it is an incredible illusion, however we shouldn't be too surprised knowing how powerful the mind is, and how easily we are fooled by our perceptions. (And we do it every night)

  • My Consciousness and your Consciousness is the same. Either knowingly, or unknowingly, one Being is moving all of the action figures. Understanding this helps me to forgive others, but more importantly, to forgive myself. The individual person is never responsible. Everything in the past was literally an act of God. I can only be responsible with how I think and feel and act now.

Constantly reminding myself of one Reality, reminds me that nothing in this life is to be taken too seriously. It helps me from getting sucked into the everyday dramas of life...and it is very easy to get sucked in!!! But sometimes getting sucked into the game is fun too :) And we always have the freedom not to choose ignorance. Either way, God is doing the choosing, so there is never anyone to blame.

The truth is mind-blowing and it liberates us from suffering. We just need to investigate until there is absolutely no doubt. I think this is what Jesus meant when he said:

'Those who seek should not stop seeking until they find. When they find, they will be disturbed. When they are disturbed, they will marvel, and will rule over all'
