Knowing is a One-Way Street

Updated: Oct 19, 2020

My guru, Francis Lucille, says “knowing is a one way street”

Like all great teachings of the truth, it is a simple concept to understand but the implications of this understanding are powerful if fully understood in an experiential way. This usually takes time. Perhaps even years in most cases (like me).

In other words, ONLY Awareness is Aware. Check. Got it. Awareness is Aware. Most people accept and understand this concept immediately because it's experiential. The answer is automatic. We are all familiar with the experience of Being Aware. In fact it is impossible to say “I am NOT aware” In the history of mankind no person ever uttered the words “I am Aware of NOT being aware” Why not? Because it is impossible.

In other words, it is NOT the body-mind that is Aware. This is the part that might take some time. It is a mind-blowing contemplation because we have been conditioned for millennia to believe that it is “I the body” that is Aware. No, that's not true. This belief needs to be challenged and investigated. As previously stated...it is Awareness that is Aware and Awareness alone.

At the risk of being side-tracked,, this is the problem with modern day science....”Scientism today is doing what the Church did in the fifteenth century: forcing theory to fit a predetermined metaphysics” - Bernardo Kastrup.

As always, the most important question to ask yourself is this: Do I care enough to find out? The overwhelming majority (including almost all of my friends) would answer no.

Do I care enough to find out for myself? This is the most important question because if you really want the truth, you WILL find it. However, the farmer plowing his field believing the world to be flat will NEVER discover that the world is round unless he temporarily suspends his belief long enough to do a proper investigation. We only need the enthusiasm to conduct an honest investigation.

Here are a couple of clues/suggestions:

First, go to the experience of Being Aware until it is absolutely clear beyond any shadow of a doubt that it is Awareness that is Aware of your current experience. Resting in this understanding could be described as perfect meditation.

Second, see clearly that objects of perception don't perceive. Simply put, perceptions can't perceive.

With our eyes closed, our only experience of the body is the current bodily sensations. Such as the sensation of my bum on the chair or the tingling sensation behind my eyes. These sensations are objects of experience appearing in Awareness and known by Awareness. Ask yourself, are sensations aware of other sensations? You need to see clearly that the answer is No. Awareness is Aware of all sensations but sensations are not themselves aware of anything. They are objects of experience.

With our eyes open, perceptions of the body also appear (although mostly in our periphery). Same question. Can a perception perceive another perception? Can a perception perceive anything?

In summary, our only experience of the body is a series of sensations and perceptions appearing in and known by Awareness. Objects of perception themselves have no ability to perceive, and therefore, knowing is a one-way street.

I would suggest remembering this the next time you sit down to mediate with the intention of finding Self or God. Who exactly is meditating? Fully understanding this concept is one way of explaining why most (if not all) practiced forms of meditation is a dead-end path to nowhere.

I paused while I was reading this and did the first step. At first there was just a flicker of understanding that it was awareness that was aware, and then thinking started to get in the way. So I went on to the next step and it was clear that the tingling in my feet was not aware of the tingling in my fingers. Even when my feet registered the thumping of the bass in the music playing, this was not what was hearing the music. I see the words on the screen as I hear the music and feel the sensations, and it's clear that there's only one channel for all this experience. So now I feel-understand directly that…
